[SG] 阿嫲算盘子

We recently received an IG request from Sister Nadra. Honestly, we don’t know her but upon digging around, we found out that some of our friends followed her page on Facebook. What’s more, she’s selling halal abacus seeds!

Abacus seeds, for those who don’t know are made from yam paste and tapioca flour. The cooking process can be tiresome. We know, we’ve made it before! But the results are definitely worth it. Abacus seeds, made right, are soft on the outside and chewy on the inside. It’s a savoury dish often taken as a main meal or a snack.

Back to Sister Nadra, here’s more about her taken from their Facebook page:

My name is Nadra, a Chinese Muslim Revert since Year 2011 InshaAllah and along with my mother @8816gina, we are excited to introduce you to our traditional and authentic Halal Hakka abacus seeds (算盘子) Handmade from scratch and using the freshest ingredients we can find on the market! Spicy and non-spicy version available for you to enjoy InshaAllah!

For those in Singapore, you should really check out her page. Besides abacus seeds, she sells peach gum red date longan dessert too.

We Tried Mooncakes From Hikmah FameLee!

Alhamdulillah! We finally got our hands on some Shanghai mooncakes! This particular mooncake has a crumbly exterior and the red bean filling is just nice, not too sweet.

We still have another 2 mooncakes in the fridge – 1 Shanghai mooncake (single yolk lotus paste filling) and 1 snowskin mooncake (rose red bean filling). Keeping those for some other day 😁

Interested to get your hands on some mooncakes? We got ours from Hikmah FameLee.

Recipe: Spicy Baked Potatoes

Today’s super simple recipe is Spicy Baked Potatoes made using our Signature Chilli Oil!

1. Cut potatoes into halves.
2. Mix potatoes with 2 to 3 spoonfuls of our chilli oil and salt to taste.
3. Bake potatoes in the oven for about 30 mins or until you get that crunchy texture on the outside.

We usually have the potatoes as they are but you can have it as a complete meal with pasta, chicken, and/or salad.

Hello Al-Amin Xinjiang Muslim Restaurant!

And we’re back at Al-Amin Xinjiang Muslim Restaurant!

The restaurant has become like a second home to us because the food is so good and they serve authentic Xinjiang food.

Plus we love the owners. They’re Chinese Muslims from China and have stayed in Malaysia for more than 10 years. Their persistence to continue running their Chinese Muslim food business in Malaysia is a huge inspiration to us and we admire them for their support and encouragement in all of our endeavours.

Our recommendation:

We are huge fans of their Xinjiang dapanji 新疆大盘鸡, Xinjiang kaobao 新疆烤包 and hawthorn herbal tea 山楂凉茶.

Recipe: 酸辣萝卜

Our side dish for dinner yesterday was 酸辣萝卜 (Sour & Spicy White Carrot) made using our Signature Chilli Oil.

A super simple dish, here’s a quick recipe:

  • Slice white carrots thinly. The thickness depends on how crunchy you’d like the white carrots to be.
  • Put a spoonful of our chilli oil, or more if you want the dish to be more spicy.
  • Add a dash or two of black vinegar, if you prefer the dish to be more sour.
  • Mix well and it’s ready to be eaten!

Note: We like to have it cold so we’d pop it in the fridge for a bit before serving.

So how do you eat 酸辣萝卜?

Eat it as a side dish with rice, noodles, or bread, or as a snack.
