Last Minute Mooncakes Shopping, Anyone?

Yesterday, we got a phone call from our aunt asking whether we know anyone who’s selling halal mooncakes. Since the Mooncake Festival is TOMORROW, our friends who are selling handmade halal mooncake have already closed their orders.

Thankfully, we can still buy mooncakes from most of the big brands, making this not much of a big deal.

Then again, it would be a major bummer if you want to buy mooncakes for someone who’s staying further away from you, like in another city or state. Interstate travel is still not allowed and it doesn’t make sense to travel all the way just to deliver a box of mooncakes. Unless it’s for a special someone or occasion.

This is when online shopping comes to the rescue.

Sure, there are many halal mooncakes online sellers out there. Since we’re always on Shopee, we felt it’s only proper to highlight the ones that always appear on our Shopee feeds.

Enough chatter, let’s just get down to business. Chop chop!

Sold More Than 5000 Mooncakes:

  1. 10.7k mooncakes sold – Runcit On Call: [HALAL] Assorted Traditional Tai Thong Mooncake 大同传统月饼 180g
  2. 9.3k mooncakes sold – Hilltown Store: 富山月饼 Foh San Mooncake | Mix & Match | HALAL
  3. 5.4k mooncakes sold – H&H Foodie: Mooncake Kuih Bulan Halal Mooncake Premium Lotus Yolk Redbean Pandan Tiramisu Lava Sesame Custard Matcha Yam Potato

As mentioned in our Top 3 Mooncake Brands We Love In Malaysia post, we love Tai Thong mooncakes. Can’t remember whether we’ve tried Foh San though. At our age, we don’t go crazy over mooncakes anymore. We haven’t even bought any for this year!

Sold More Than 1000 But Less Than 5000 Mooncakes:

  1. 4.3k mooncakes sold Aldapo: MOONCAKE 50G / CHEAP MINI HALAL MOONCAKE / KUIH BULAN MURAH TAPI SEDAP
  2. 2.6k mooncakes sold – Sugarpastrymy: Halal mooncake Kuih Bulan Halal Malaysia 140g Sugarpastry
  3. 1.5k mooncakes sold: Haoliao: 發發饼家 月饼 12 款口味 Huat Huat Kouping Mooncake (12 Flavors) *HALAL*

We’ll go an extra limb here, we have been bombarded with Sugarpastry‘s mooncake ads on our Instagram account. Were we tempted to buy a box? Millions of times!! Yet we never bought any. Again, it’s not them, it’s us. It’s the age talking and we need to watch our sugar intake.

Sold More Than 500 But Less Than 1000 Mooncakes:

  1. 804 mooncakes sold – Zone Shopper Online: (Wholesale) Halal Mooncake / Kek Bulan Homemade – 50gram (4x4cm)
  2. 727 mooncakes sold – T&G Online: Baker’s Cottage 麦可思 月饼礼盒 自选装配套 清真月饼 HALAL Mooncake Customise Premium Quality Vegetarian Fresh & Natural
  3. 703 mooncakes sold – Pastry by Atira: Halal Mooncake By Atira MINIMUM 4 BIJI (INTI BANYAK)

Yes! Another one of our favourite mooncake brands made it to the list! There’s a Baker’s Cottage outlet that opened in our neighbourhood recently and it’s been milking us dry with their roast chicken rice sets and egg tarts deals. They will not do the same with their mooncakes. Not on our watch!

Sold Less Than 500 Mooncakes:

  1. 212 mooncakes sold – Eaty Mighty: MOONCAKE HALAL / KUIH BULAN HALAL- Mini Size
  2. 104 mooncakes sold – Gezytrading: 『 Ready 』 Penang moon cake 月饼 kek bulan halal kuih bulan halal mooncake Minimum 2 pcs
  3. 55 mooncakes sold – HNF Catering: [HALAL] HNF Catering Homemade Baked Skin Mooncake

Honest confession, we have not tried any of these mooncakes. No reason for you not to try it though!

On a personal note, HNF Catering’s mooncakes nearly got us there with the ‘no preservatives‘ bit. We’re huge on food products made with no preservatives, but since we’re not as crazy over mooncakes anymore, chances are we won’t be making any purchases this year.

There you have it. All you need to do is to order the mooncakes make payment, and he or she will receive it in the mail. Easy, peasy.

3 Ways To Get The Best Mooncake Deals In Town

Alright, let’s get straight to the point – who thinks mooncakes are expensive?

The thing here is, some would say mooncakes are expensive, but if you count in the effort and time used to make mooncakes, perhaps the price is not that pricey after all.

Anyway, we are not here to argue about that. What we want to do is to share how can you get the best mooncake deal in town! Want to know more? Read on!

1. Buy During Promotion

It’s not rocket science really. Buying anything during promotion is by far the easiest way to get the best deal. How do you spot them? Well, some mooncake manufacturers run a month-long promotion selling their mooncakes at promotional booths. You can easily find them in shopping malls or Mid-Autumn fairs. There are even mooncake manufacturers that offer discount codes or cashbacks when you purchase a certain number of mooncakes or do online purchases.

2. Buy After The Mooncake Season

The whole idea of buying mooncakes is for you to enjoy them during the mooncake season. But you can still enjoy mooncakes after the Mid-Autumn festival too. Mooncake prices can drop up to 30% and more once the season is over! Considering the fact that mooncakes have a long shelf life, if you love mooncakes and don’t mind having them after the season, then this is the best way for you to enjoy as many mooncake flavours as you want at a fraction of its original price! Take note that popular flavours may not be available anymore.

3. Buy From Home Bakers

This is a bit tricky. The prices for mass-produced mooncakes can be cheaper than home bakers. However, without the brand name, expensive ingredients and fancy packaging, the price of home bakers mooncakes can be significantly cheaper. You’ll need to scout around for the best prices though. On the plus point, if you choose to buy from home bakers, think of it that you are supporting their dream to someday become one of the big brands too, or that you’re encouraging someone to go after his/her passion. You can’t get a better deal than that, can you?

Come to think of it, we still have 2 mooncakes in the fridge. Off to cut and enjoy a slice!

Top 5 Mooncake Flavours According To Our Tummy

Do you know how many mooncake flavours are there in the market? If your answer is yes, we take our hats off you!

We’re not sure about other countries but here in Malaysia, new mooncake flavours are introduced to the market annually. That makes a lot of sense because mooncakes are highly versatile. They can be filled with all sorts of filling – sweet or savoury!

So how do you choose which filling to buy? In our case, we like to stick to the classics. Go with traditional flavours, something you’re familiar with. Once you’ve gotten a hang of it, move on to non-traditional flavours.

Let’s cut to the chase and see the top 5 flavours according to our tummy.

1. Mixed Nuts Mooncake 五仁月饼

This mooncake flavour is commonly found in K’s home town. It’s a pretty healthy mooncake since it has five kinds of nuts or kernels such as walnuts, almonds, sesame seeds, melon seeds, red beans and etc. Naturally, the mooncake has a nutty and sweet flavour because of the fillings. We love this particular mooncake flavour to bits mainly because it reminds us of his home town.

2. Red Bean Mooncake 豆沙月饼

The classic sweet red bean mooncake flavour never goes wrong. The smooth and rich taste of sweet bean paste always brings back our childhood memories of eating bread and pastries filled with sweet bean paste. There’s just something comforting about biting into a piece of your childhood.

3. White Lotus Mooncake 莲蓉月饼

Ooohh, and here’s another one of our favourites! The lotus mooncake is filled with silky smooth white lotus paste. We absolutely adore this flavour and make an effort to find the less sweeter option for family and friends.

4. Salted Egg Yolk Mooncake 蛋黄月饼

Let’s get this straight, the entire mooncake is not filled with salted egg yolk. Rather, the mooncake is filled with white lotus or any other flavours and at the very centre of the mooncake, you’ll find 1 or 2 salted egg yokes. Sounds crazy to put something salty with something sweet but it works! This odd combination is what makes this mooncake so popular. Just try it!

5. Green Tea Mooncake 茶叶月饼

Okay, so we’re taking a huge risk with this. Green tea flavoured mooncakes are undeniably not one of our top favourites, but considering the fact that they’re pretty healthy and not as sweet compared to other mooncake fillings, we thought, hey, let’s just put it in the list. Don’t get us wrong, we love green tea. But green tea mooncakes? Hey, if we love green tea, surely we can learn to love green tea mooncakes too. For health!

There you have it, our top 5 mooncake flavours! The best thing about these flavours are you can find them easily. The only difference would be the textures, sweetness and smoothness levels.

Let us know if you love any of these flavours too!

Top 3 Mooncake Brands We Love In Malaysia

Unlike the previous years, we didn’t go on a mooncake eating spree this year. In fact, this post is based on mooncake brands that we tried over the past few years.

We’ve been loyal to some brands, and we’ve also stopped eating certain brands. Would we try other brands? Definitely! It’s just that there are so many brands in the market, it’d take us ages to try them all.

Let’s not forget the ones made by home bakers. We’ve tried some of them and hey, the flavours and quality do not pale in comparison compared to established brands. That’s a post kept for another day.

Baker’s Cottage

We love their pastries and breads! Back in KL we used to get our mooncakes from them. They serve yummy mooncakes, packed in beautiful boxes.

Our favourite is the Pure Lotus series, with yolk.

A handy little piece of information from their website, their mooncakes are baked in cholesterol-free cooking oil, with no added preservatives. The mooncakes are Halal certified and strictly conformed to the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, ISO 22000 food safety management system and HACCP international food safety standard. Talk about quality!

Juicy tidbit of the day, they made mooncakes for Starbucks too!

Kam Lun Tai Food

Considering they’ve been in the business since 1971, it’s not surprising that their mooncakes are pretty good. We’ve tried several types over the years, and we always come back to their classic and traditional mooncakes.

Oh, and get this, their mooncakes are Halal certified too! We remember how pretty their boxes looked like and we may still have one or two boxes somewhere in the house.

In case you’re wondering what drives us to try a certain brand? It all comes down to the packaging. Show us the pretty boxes, beautiful designs, and other aesthetics, and we’ll be sold to try the mooncake. Because let’s face it, if the packaging is nice AND the mooncake is good, we’d definitely want to buy it as gifts for family and friends.

Tai Thong Mooncake

Once upon a time we thought Tai Thong mooncakes were the fanciest Halal mooncakes ever! Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but their boxes always look elegant and classy. We still keep some of their tin boxes at home just because they’re so pretty and functional as they last longer compared to paper and cardboard boxes.

As for their mooncakes, we adore them to bits! A bit of an exaggeration again, but biting into their mooncakes gave us a sense of class and elegance. Sort of like a cloud 9 experience.

Which one is our favourite then?

In order of preference, we’d almost always buy Baker’s Cottage mooncakes for ourselves, family and friends. Kam Lun Tai and Tai Thong mooncakes come as a tie, depending on the flavour we’re looking for and yes, the box!

There you have it, the top 3 mooncake brands that we love in Malaysia!

Now if you’re new with mooncakes and want to play it safe, just get your mooncake from one of these brands. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed, insha’Allah. Enjoy your mooncakes!
